หิ่งห้อย
หนึ่งในภาพความประทับใจของผู้คนที่ได้เดินทางมาสัมผัสสมุทรสงคราม คือ การล่องเรือชมหิ่งห้อย ซึ่งบรรดาหิ่งห้อยเหล่านี้ อาศัยอยู่บนต้นลำพู ในยามค่ำคืนจะเปล่งประกายแสงเรืองรอง เพื่อเรียกคู่ไปทั้งต้นลำพู ตลอดสองฝั่งริมน้ำ ราวกับมีไฟขนาดเล็กมาประดับอยู่บนต้นไม้อย่างสวยงาม หิ่งห้อยกะพริบแสง เพราะใช้สื่อสารกับเพศตรงข้าม (ตัวเมีย) เพื่อบอกความพร้อมในการสืบพันธุ์ โดยที่ตัวผู้จะเป็นฝ่ายกะพริบแสงก่อน หากตัวเมียเห็นลีลาการกะพริบแสงแล้วพอใจ ตัวเมียก็จะกะพริบแสงตอบ เพื่อให้ตัวผู้รู้ว่าอยู่ที่ไหน จะได้บินไปหาถูกนั่นเอง คุณอาจคิดว่าหิ่งห้อยมีหลายร้อยตัว ยิ่งเมื่อรวมกันเป็นฝูงแล้ว จะรู้ได้อย่างไรว่าแสงจากตัวใดกะพริบ หิ่งห้อยแต่ละชนิดนั้นมันจะมีลีลาในการกะพริบแสงที่แตกต่างกัน อาทิเช่น การกะพริบแสงช้าเร็วต่างกัน และลีลาการเปล่งแสงออกมาของหิ่งห้อยอาจเป็นไปตามสิ่งแวดล้อมที่มันอยู่ มันจึงรู้ว่าตัวใดกะพริบตอบ สิ่งสำคัญนักท่องเที่ยวที่มาเยือนควรเคารพกฎกติกาในการชมหิ่งห้อยด้วย เพื่อให้การท่องเที่ยวชมหิ่งห้อยของจังหวัดสมุทรสงคราม มีความยั่งยืน
Fireflies
Having a boat ride to view fireflies at night is an activity that many visitors to Samut Songkhram include in their programme. A river cruise at night lets them enter the enchanting world of fireflies swarming in trees
along the river banks. Fireflies flash in order to attract those of the opposite sex as a signal that they get ready for breeding. Male fireflies first flash and then the female ones will flash in response to show where they are so that the male ones can fly to see them, thus creating an unbelievable sight for viewers.
As there may be hundreds of fireflies swarming with each other, you may wonder how fireflies themselves can identify each other. The answer is that each species of fireflies has its unique style of flashing. To illustrate, different species have different speeds of flashing or some species glow differently in a different environment.
